Haverford Recreation offers environmental education programs tailored towards the STEAM requirements with the goal of enhancing people’s connection with, and understanding of, the natural world. The beautiful, Haverford Reserve, is an ideal location for your group’s next field trip. We have over 124 acres of open space, two first-order streams, four water retention basins, and a native grass meadow.
Our agenda includes 60 or 90 minutes of environmental education followed by 60 minutes of picnic table space under our pavilion at Freedom Playground. Trips include activities and games related to the topic of your choosing, hands-on learning experiences, and an outdoor exploration of our trails. Our 15:1 student to educator ratio ensures every child has a positive experience.
- $7 per student (chaperones are free). Fee due in full prior to your trip (we accept cash, check, and credit card).

Fall/Spring Nature Exploration (Grades K-1) - 60 minutes

Show some respect for our underground friends! We'll use our hands, eyes, and nose to search for the critters that crawl through our soil. Watershed Investigator (Grades 2-5) - 90 minutes
*Addresses standards 3.3, 4.2,
Our staff favorite! Learn about the water cycle and how our water travels through our build environment. Engage in a hands-on investigation to find what lives in our streams - who knew macroinvertebrates could be so exciting?
All About Animals (Grades 2-5) - 90 minutes
*Addresses standards 3.1, 4.1
Our crowd favorite! Compare the adaptive mechanisms of mammals and plants that help assure their survival within distinct ecological niches. We will also learn about habitats and the specific needs they meet for animals/plants.
Fun with Flora (Grades 2-5) - 90 minutes
*Addresses standards 3.1, 4.1
Students will learn about the parts of a flower, the things plants/seeds need to survive, pollinators and their role, and students will search our ecosystem for signs of plants, flowers, and more.
Rain policy: Because we do not have access to an indoor facility, we reserve the right to postpone field trips due to severe weather. Most of our trip is under some sort of cover so light rain won’t impact the experience. We make sure to touch base prior to the field trip and again on the day of the trip.
Bathroom Access: There will be access to a bathroom at the beginning and end of the field trip We’ll always be in close proximity to a bathroom so a chaperone can take children to the restroom during the trip.
Lunch: Upon arrival, students/teachers can drop off their lunches and belongings for storage during your trip. Once the educational portion of the trip is over, you'll be brought to a roped-off lunch area next to Freedom Playground.
